Interior of America Essay Example for Free
Interior of America Essay à lvar Nà ºÃ ±ez Cabeza De Vacas epic tales in Adventures in the Unknown Interior ofAmerica is one of the earliest recorded stories of exploration of the Americas. His story begins on April 14, 1528 and continues in great detail for eight long years. His narrative includes his personal experience as well as descriptions of the land he traveled and the native americans that he encountered. The detailed events that are present throughout Cabeza De Vacas adventure transform him into a man completely different than the one we were introduced to at the beginning of the exploration. The superior mindset that Cabeza De Vaca felt over the natives, the challenges that would threaten his faith and religion, and the view he had of his fellow christians would change him tremendously as an individual. The expedition, led by Governor Narvà ¡ez, began with a 600 men crew in Florida. On their journey, they faced many challenges. The men encountered storms, were attacked several times by native american tribes, endured slavery and captivity, suffered starvation and dehydration, as well as several other down falls that eventually contributed to the death of hundreds of the Spanish crew. By the end of the eight years, Cabeza De Vaca was one of only four men who survived the cruel journey. The ability to adapt to their surroundings helped those four men change their views from powerless to acceptance and ultimately resulted in their return to Spain. Cabeza De Vaca was accustomed to a life of higher society before the departure to America. He was born into a wealthy family which contributed to a feeling of superiority over others. This mind set traveled with him as he encountered many Native American tribes during the expedition. Cabeza De Vaca thought of the native americans as barbaric creatures and feared for his life at the thought of an attack from them. They loomed big and naked and from a distance looked like giants. They were handsomely proportioned, lean, agile, and strong. (CH8) He goes on to mention the intimidation of their weapons, Their bows were as thick as an arm. (CH8) Attacks were happening frequently, and after realizing that the circumstances were not promising, the Spaniards began to try a different approach.

The Tragedy of Global Warming :: Greenhouse Effect Climate Change
The Tragedy of Global Warming The health issues of global warming are causing the human population rate to decrease over time. The health issues are caused by infectious microbes, pollution by chemical and biological wastes. Many of these diseases will cause illnesses or even death in the future. In fact, many scientists and doctors have discovered these diseases will cause human population to decrease by deaths as they are transferred from one person to the next either physical, eating animals contaminated, mosquitoes, or even blood transfusions though needles. Global warming has been discovered to be very dangerous to human health and is causing many deaths around the world. These tragic experiences in other countries are causing the health hazards to become more aware to humans and are giving the USA more time to plan cures for it before it becomes an issue for them. Global warming is affecting the health issues in todayââ¬â¢s generation as well as the futureââ¬â¢s generation. Global warming causes many different health issues to the human body. With the temperatureââ¬â¢s rising, the risk of cancer is increasing. According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute between 1975 and 1991 skin cancer increased by 812 percent. ââ¬Å"El Nino made1998 the warmest year ever recordedâ⬠(Bell 129). The warm temperature resulted in the worldwide outbreak of mosquitoes. With the warm temperatures mosquitoes were infected with different diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, rift valley fever and several other kinds of diseases. The World Health Organization said there were ââ¬Å"quantitative leapsâ⬠in malaria cases around the world. ââ¬Å"Thousands were infected with Rift Valley fever in Kenya, resulting in 200 deathsâ⬠(129). Many people around the world think that the earth is in danger because of global warming. ââ¬Å"Rising temperatures will have enormous impact on the earth in the futureâ⬠(pewtrust). With the temperatures rising this will cause the icebergs to melt and make the sea level rise. ââ¬Å"Rising sea levels inundating coastal communities, altered crop yields and water supplies, increased floods and droughts and surge in infectious disease. The water will be tainted because of the water runoff pushing chemicals into our water supply. This will cause people to get sick or even die. With it getting hotter the carbon dioxide levels are rising. This may cause weeds to grow faster and take over the crops we need. Paul R. Epstein, a doctor from Harvard Medical School found a very interesting fact in his research that discussed how many people he estimates are going to be affected by global warming in the future.

The Wys in Which Steinbeck Presents Conflict in George’s Relationship with Lennie
ââ¬ËOf Mice and Menââ¬â¢ is written by John Steinbeck, published in 1937. The novel is set in the 1930s during the great depression in California. The two protagonist characters, George and Lennie are farm workers who have a dream of one-day owning their own ranch. They find work in a ranch near Soledad which means loneliness in Spanish, after escaping from Weed because of Georgeââ¬â¢s incident. They are met by different characters on the farm that all have a dream. In this story, the characters are lonely because although they are all together they all feel very much on their own. George and Lennie do not see themselves as lonely as the other characters because they have each other and a dream to go away one day together. In the novel there are two main characters, Lennie and George who are friends. ââ¬ËThey had walked in single file down the path and even in the open one stayed behind the other. Both were dressed in denim trousers and in denim coats with brass buttons. Both wore black, shapeless hats and both carried tight blanket rolls slung over their shoulders. From the first sight of Lennie and George, a dynamic in their relationship is established. Though the men are outwardly of the same class (wearing identical clothes and carrying identical gear), one still walks behind the other. George is, of course, the leader, but it seems he doesnââ¬â¢t value himself as necessarily superior to Lennie; theyââ¬â¢re both in it together. Lennie is a simple chap who has the mind of a child; George feels a need to look after Lennie and so takes on the role of a protective parent. While this thing going on George often gets frustrated with him because he has to look after him all the time and he doesnââ¬â¢t have time for himself. On this George says: ââ¬ËWhatever we ainââ¬â¢t got, thatââ¬â¢s what you want. God a ââ¬Ëmighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job anââ¬â¢ work, and no trouble. No mess at all, and when the end of the month I could take my fifty bucks and go into town and get whatever I want. ââ¬â¢ Steinbeck goes to great length to create very different personas for the two men even making the two different physically. In the later part of the text George says ââ¬ËIf I was your relative Iââ¬â¢d shoot myself. ââ¬â¢ This shows that George doesnââ¬â¢t really care for Lennie and he just wants an easy life as a migrant worker. At this time, The Great Depression, workers had to keep a job to keep them alive, so it was important to get the destination. Lennie at this time is being frustratingly slow therefore George is getting angry. The word ââ¬Ërelativeââ¬â¢ in this context means that George doesnââ¬â¢t want the responsibility of Lennie because he can live a lot easier without the burden. However as they only had each other George was reluctant to leave Lennie and travel alone, even though there were frequent conflicts between them. The context of the novel fits well with the scene when George is shouting at Lennie, after losing another job. Lennie has just been fired because he was accused of sexually assaulting women, when actually he didnââ¬â¢t. George knows this and stuck up for Lennie, resulting in Lennie being fired too. ââ¬ËI got you! You canââ¬â¢t keep a job and you lose me every job I getââ¬â¢. Here George loses his temper with Lennie, because once again they have been fired from their jobs, it causes conflict between the two. ââ¬ËI got you! ââ¬â¢ is a cruel and unnecessary thing to say, here George is insulting that his whole problem in life and the main reason for this upset is of the fact that he is having to put up with Lennie, it shows how much conflict and hurt was caused was caused in the 1930s, because the lack of money and food, all added up pressure, and resulted in mean outbursts like this. George seems to be of two minds when it comes to Lennie. He complains constantly that if he did not have Lennie he would be done with a huge responsibility. He could go to town, drink when he wanted, have a girlfriend, shoot pool, and in general have a life. Tired of constantly reminding Lennie things he should remember, George gets quickly angry when Lennie forgets to get the firewood, for example and instead goes after the dead mouse. On the other hand Georgeââ¬â¢s anger is quickly under control and he blames himself for scolding Lennie. Steinbeck makes it clear that, despite his complaining and frustration, George looks out for Lennie and genuinely cares for him. The fact that George has repeated his instructions many times, the fact that he scolds Lennine for doing things (like petting the dead mouse or drinking the untested water) that could hurt him, and most importantly, the fact that George retails the story of their shared dream indicate the close relationship the two men have. In fact, George acts as a parent towards Lennie. He treats Lennie as one would treat a child, he laughs a great deal at Lennieââ¬â¢s words, and because he knows how much Lennie likes soft things, he promises to try to get Lennie a puppy and let him take care for the rabbits when they finally get their own ranch. LENNIE ââ¬ËI was only foolinââ¬â¢, George. I donââ¬â¢t want no ketchup. I wouldnââ¬â¢t eat no ketchup if it were right here beside me. ââ¬â¢ GEORGE ââ¬Ë If it was here, you could have someââ¬â¢ LENNIE ââ¬ËBut I wouldnââ¬â¢t eat none, George. Iââ¬â¢d leave it all for you. You could cover you beans with it and I wouldnââ¬â¢t touch none of it. ââ¬â¢ After Georgeââ¬â¢s mean outburst about how much better off heââ¬â¢d be without Lennie, Lennie is the one who makes the first move to apologize for being a jerk. Even after this awful fight, the menââ¬â¢s friendship has a simple and remarkable erectness. George grudgingly knows heââ¬â¢s wrong and in fact he really loves his friend, and even though Lennie canââ¬â¢t express it in a terribly complex way, he loves George back.

Oppression of Women in Chopins Story of an Hour and...
Oppression of Women in Chopins Story of an Hour and Gilmans Yellow Wallpaper The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman share the same view of the subordinate position of women in the late 1800s. Both stories demonstrate the devastating effects on the mind and body that result from an intelligent person living with and accepting the imposed will of another. This essay will attempt to make their themes apparent by examining a brief summery of their stories and relating them to their personal histories. It will reveal this theme further through analysis of setting, visual and conceptual symbolism, and by exploring the relationships between the characters in each story. She suffered from a severe and continuos nervous breakdown tending to melancholia (Gilman). A famous physician prescribed the rest cure which she claims nearly drove her insane. She wrote The Yellow Wallpaper as a way of protesting his methods (Gilman). The main setting of both stories occurs in a room; however, these two rooms have very contrasting atmospheres. In Chopin?s story the light and peaceful environment depicted by the author promotes the concept that Louise is beginning a new and wonderful life after being told of the death of her husband, releasing her from his imposing will. She sinks into a comfortable armchair facing an open window. The trees are aquiver with new life, the smell of rain is in the air, and a woman is singing. On the other hand, The Yellow Wallpaper is set in a room that evokes the impression of imprisonment. There are bars on the windows, a gate at the top of the stairs, rings and things in the walls, and the pattern in the wallpaper reminds her of bars with a woman trapped behind them. Even the bed is nailed to the floor. This setting helps Gilman to impart her theme of oppression of women in marriage. Definition and Examples of Prepositional Adverbs
In English grammar, a prepositional adverb is anà adverbà that can function as aà preposition. Unlike an ordinary preposition, a prepositional adverb is not followed by anà object. Adverbs, Prepositions, and Prepositional Adverbs Make sure you know the difference between adverbs and prepositions before diving into studying prepositional adverbs. Pay attention to how these parts of speech are used separately to better understand how a word can be both. Adverbs An adverb is a word used to describe or modify a verb, adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs can describe how, when, or, where an action is performed. Adverb Examples How When Where carefully before/after here happily daily there quickly weekly inside/outside How, when, where adverbs Prepositions A preposition, on the other hand, is used to show movement, location, or time. It is a word that introduces a prepositional phrase, which usually ends with an object. Prepositional phrases include expressions such as through the tunnel, below the sink, and in the morning. Preposition Examples Movement Location Time from in after/before through above until around near at Movement, location, and time prepositions Prepositional Adverbs Sometimes, an adverb is also a preposition or a preposition is also an adverb. Words that can function as prepositional adverbs include: about, above, across, after, along, around, before, behind, below, between, beyond, by, down, in, inside, near, on, opposite, out, outside, over, past, round, since, through, throughout, under, up, within, and without. Phrasal Verbs Prepositional adverbs, also calledà adverbial particles, can further be used to formà phrasal verbs. These are idiomatic expressions consisting of a verb and a particleââ¬âthis can be an adverb alone, a preposition, or a prepositional adverbââ¬âthat form a single semantic unit. These are common in everyday English. A phrasal verb is a type of compound verb. Examples include break down, pull up, call on, give in, and hold back. Many phrasal verbs are formed with prepositional adverbs but not all prepositional adverbs form phrasal verbs. What makes phrasal verbs unique is the fact that their meaning is not the sum of their parts, as Grover Hudson points out in Essential Introductory Linguistics. In this book, Hudson offers the example of throw[ing] up, an action that doesnt involve either throwing or a direction up. Another example is call off, meaning to cancel. The meaning of the verb call is transformed by the addition of the prepositional adverb off, contributing entirely new meaning to the phrasal verb (Hudson 1999). A single verb can be made into several different phrasal verbs, each with their own distinct meaning, simply by adding different prepositions. For example, the verb come can be turned into come up with, meaning to think of an idea; come in, meaning to enter; come across, meaning to find; and come forward, meaning to offer information. Prepositional Adverb Example Sentences One way to spot a prepositional adverb is to look for prepositions that do not have corresponding objects. Often, but not always, these prepositions also serve as adverbs. Reference the following examples to practice identifying prepositional adverbs. We were playing records, Mama, listening to the radio, just hanging around. Mama, just hanging around, (Waiting for Macarthur 2003).Ring-a-ring-a-roses,A pocket full of posies;Hush! hush! hush! hush!Weââ¬â¢re all tumbled down, (Greenaway 1881).He called her up, she said oracularly, he called her up, and asked her to keep you at the telephone, so he could talk to Miss Louise. A thankless child is sharper than a serpents tooth, (Rinehart 1908).After he finished wiping his shoes, he stepped inside. In the last quarter of the game, their fans cheered them on.In the middle of the investigation, an informant came forward with valuable information. As they passed by, they saw all kinds of amazing sights through the window of the train. The adverbs in these examples are also prepositions because they modify actions and describe spatial or temporal relations. For example, tumbled down shows how and where the subject tumbled. Notice that in these examples, prepositional adverbs are not used toà form prepositional phrases. This means that each preposition functioning as an adverb appears without an objectââ¬âbecause of this, it is not only a preposition but also an adverb. Pure Prepositions Vs.à Prepositional Adverbs If you are still confused about the difference between prepositions and prepositional adverbs, dont worry. In his book The Elements of English Grammar, George Philip Krapp writes, The difference between the pure preposition and the prepositional adverb is illustrated by the following two sentences: He ran up the stairs. He ran up a bill. In the first sentence, a prepositional phrase, stairs is the object of up. The expression up the stairs is aà prepositional phraseà modifying the verb ran. In the second sentence, however, bill is not the object of up and up a bill is, therefore, not a prepositional phrase modifying the verb ran. Rather, the word up is acting as a prepositional adverb modifying the verb ran. Together, the two words form the phrasal verb ran up, an expression whose distinct meaning has nothing to do with the act of running (Krapp 1970). Homes and businesses were destroyed, many African Americans and whites were killed, and Tulsa had lost its soul. In the beginning Oklahoma was just a young state, and Tulsa was just a young town, trying to find its place in the world. As Mr. Patrick stated this was probably one of the worst if not the worst domestic act violence. Even today people do not have the knowledge or refuse to believe what happened that day in 1921. The official death toll was 35(Patrick, 1999) but it is believed that many more hundreds were killed, because many bodies were dumped into the river of coal mines or burned (Patrick, 1999). Here are other numbers that Mr. Patrick writes in his article, 1500 African American homes destroyed, 600 businesses destroyed, 21 churches, 21 restaurants, 30 stores, 2 movie theaters, a hospital, a bank, a post office, libraries, and schools. It takes people with an exponential amount of hate in their hearts would be able to do destroy institutions that exist only for the benefit of mankind. The Statistics prove that Greenwood Avenue was once vibrant and full of life. Greenwood Avenue not only just provided great economic means for African Americans, but it was a place where their hopes and dreams came alive. For example, printing and mailing of catalogs have provided a great decisional support for your purchases. Printing of catalogs and mailing cost are raising the merchandise prices. The company has decided to save money by reducing the number of customers who receive the catalog. As an alternative policy, the company will send a catalog for three years to the people who have placed an order within a 12-month period. While, for other customers, only the holiday catalog will be sent in December. Co-operation with the new policy will be appreciated. Sincerely Chinaberry Inc. 2.The Merchandising Manager Nordstrom Inc Seattle Dear Robert Kilcline Thank you for your kind recommendation about opening a new store in Fashion Square Mall, an upscale department store on the north side. I appreciate the concern as you want to be competitive in the market despite high costs. There is abundant inventory to ensure a complete selection of sizes and colors. This is a trait that is put efforts for instilling and nurturing in all your employees. The no-questions-asked return policy is offered by you with abundant inventory. A harpist is employed to be on the main floor every day for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. I appreciate your efforts for being customer-conscious. The alternative recommendation put up for having an over-sized dressing room is considered. I appreciate your thought to provide the customers with ease with a comfortable chair, garment rack, and adjustable three-sided mirrors. After checking with the facility planner of the new store, it was discovered that a certain amount of space is available for your store. The retail stores are quite expensive in this mall up to $18,500 and a lease of $225. To protect the high cost to consumers, we restrict the availability of mall space to you. Any space taken up by dressing room is at expenses of the public store areas. The mall is nearly 50 per cent more expensive than that of your other locations. Since the Nordstrom facility engineers are trying to make every inch of space count, it is advised to search for a new location but this mall. Alternative recommendations from you would be appreciated and taken into consideration. Ideas that would cut down some amount of cost that would benefit both the store and customers would be humbly appreciated. Sincerely, Rebecca Chavez Executive Vice President 3. Public Service Company of Arkansas 189 Blackwood Lane Little Rock, AR 72207 Dear Ms. Malcom Thank you for writing to us. It is extremely disheartening to know about the loss you have gone through. The ten pots of azaleas were ordered from Jackson Perkins on February 3 at $27.50 each exclusive of shipping. I appreciate your dedication to decorate the stage for the new hydroelectric plant. The shipping charges accounted to be $10.50. As the company committed, it was delivered to you in show condition. The azaleas were ready to burst into bloom within three days. In this case, it was guaranteed that the money would be refunded to you for the same. As reported by you, the plants arrived in healthy condition. The flowers were in the finals hours of flowering. I am sorry to hear an additional amount of $436 was paid by you for the florist plants substituting azaleas. The azaleas were planted only three days before dedication as a part of permanent landscaping. As a representative of Jackson Perkins, I regret informing you that a reimbursement of $150.50 cannot be provided to you. Jackson Perkins goes through a great amount of expense and uses only highest quality patented stock. The company packs each order in dampened sphagnum moss. On observing no changes in the display of the azaleas bought by us, an immediate refund would have been made by us. Evidently, the azaleas are now thriving where they were planted. With all due respect, I am sorry to inform you that the refund for the same cannot be made as the plants arrived in healthy condition on February 3. Also, the terms of the company state that an immediate refund would be made if it did not bloom within three days. The amount paid by you to a local florist was $150.50 more than what was paid to Jackson Perkins for stage decorations.
